Understanding the Passage
At the table, the Lord takes the place of a servant. His example shows that love is not chiefly a feeling or a public claim but humble action for another’s good. He commands disciples to love one another as He has loved them. That kind of love becomes a visible witness to the world. When love costs our comfort, Christ’s own service gives us a model and a reason.
